Personal: Starting Over

Why Sometimes We Owe Ourselves to Start Over

Here we are – six months into 2022 and before you know it, next month we will be half way through another year again. Sometimes it is scary to think how fast time elapses and how life just happened in the blink of an eye. Often, we conduct a pulse check and assess our lives – Where we are and how far away from where we want to be. Sometimes this can be a confronting experience and feeling when we do these kind of pulse checks.

In Vogue Australia January 2021, author Meg Mason courageously shared her experience on starting over. In the article, she spoke of her experience when she decided to delete her nearly complete novel. She exposed the anxiety and fear before she gathered her courage to email her publisher to inform them about her fatally flawed draft, and her decision to give up on the book she had spent months writing.

Her experience with starting over resonates with many of us. Life is never smooth sailing – be it personal relationship, school, university or workplace. Sometimes we owe ourselves the courage to start all over again. It may be confronting and daunting to take the leap of faith to restart, however, knowing that this time when you start all over again, you are starting with experience and wisdom.

There is also a line from Hot of Cleveland, where Melanie Moretti (played by Valerie Bertilleni) said:

Would you be [an age] and still wondering ‘what if I become [something]’, or rather work hard now and become [something] when you are [that age]’?

– Hot in Cleveland

The rhetorical question resonates really well with this situation. Often it can be confronting and daunting to step outside of our comfort zone, however, if we never have the courage to start all over again, we will never be able to break free from the status quo.

If you are too afraid, start with something small first next week. It can be as simple as making the effort to wake up in the morning for 1km or 1-mile walk around the block, or clean your bathroom or wardrobe? Or if you do not have the habit to make your bed, make the effort to make your bed after waking up. As you slowly gain the confidence to change some of your habits or restart your way of life, then before you know it, you will be ready to make some huge changes to your life.
